Hike in Hayward Hills

Filed under: Photo Albums,Random Thoughts — harrison at 2:42 pm on Sunday, August 22, 2010

Christine and I take turns hanging out with Anders in the afternoons. Sometimes we do what Anders wants to do, which is invariably either the library or the park. Some days, we do what we want to do like go to the mall, hardware store, go to the bank, or run errands.

On the days that Christine and Anders are out romping, I try to head out to the Hayward Hills trail in the next canyon over. It is 3.5 miles of uphill and downhill rolling terrain. The entire trail is under a dense canopy of trees that shelters hikers even on the hottest days. The trail follows a two streams that carve out the canyon face.

What I like about the trail is that it changes every time I hike. The steep terrain makes it hard for the trees to establish a firm foothold. Any rainstorm will cause a number of weaker to trees to fall. The dense vegetation amplifies the competition for sunlight. You see trees bending their trunks, growing parallel to the ground, to work around other more established trees. Naturally, these two factors don’t work well together, and calamity ensues, big trees fall, some with trunks larger than my arms in a bear hug.

I used to run these trails when I was in better condition. Lately, I’ve been trying to slow down. Bringing my camera along with me, I had goals other than to use nature as a treadmill and spend more time in appreciation.

Caden’s Birthday Bash!

Our neighbor Maria and Steven threw an killer birthday bash for their son Caden. With attractions such as a water park big enough for 10 kids to run around in, a bbq banquet lunch with five or more different kinds of meat (I honestly thought it was catered until I saw Steven over the grill), and Lightning Mcqueen themed decorations and goodie bag for the kids to take home, I called this party the best kids birthday bash ever.

Most inspirational of all was that Maria was a week away from her delivery for her second child! Both Anders and Arden had a great time and passed out immediately after they got in the car. Although we only live a couple minutes away, they were fast asleep by midway home.

Arden in July 2010

This post is dedicated mostly to her photos and videos as Arden is really coming into her own.  She loves my company, unlike Anders at this age.  She greets me at the door with a happy shriek and cuddles in my arm contentedly when we watch Blues Clues with her brother.

Just a side note, Christine and I share the camera, so it is quite hard to determine who took what photo.  As with everything in life, she’s good at some types of shots, and I am with others.  Giving credit where credit is due.

Summer of 2010 is the happiest in my recent memory.   The kids are growing nicely and everything is stable.  Unfortunately, I had an incident of shingles, and may have permanent dark spots around my eye.. but hey, as my dad put it.  I’m married with kids.  What do I care about looks!

LA Anime Expo – Part 2

We were right on time for Mandy’s Birthday and we went to an old favorite of ours in Monterey Park called Open Door.  It is a Japanese Tapas Bar or Izakaya, serving small dishes of traditional Japanese sushi/sashimi, cooked dishes, to crazier offerings like truffle butter edamame.

The next day we found our way to Descanso Gardens to enjoy the summer weather, plants, and animals.  The night ended with a solid ramen offering from Daikokuya with the best ramen egg we have had in the states.  An entire egg was offered per bowl of ramen, not the usual half-egg.  The middle of the egg was half-cooked in the perfect amber-colored glaze.

Oddly enough, the drive down and back from LA went by incredibly quick.  Maybe time does speed up as we get older.

LA’s Anime Expo via Mandy, Chunpeng, and Cats – Part 1

Christine and I have been big Anime fans for almost a decade now.  This year Christine organized a trip to the largest Anime convention in the US, the Anime Expo, which is held every year in LA around the 4th of July.  Originally, it was a way to get all our old friends (who all watch anime to some degree) to reunite and spend some time together by renting a vacation home in LA for a week, but alas, jobs and obligations intervened and most of them begged off.

We wound up scaling back the plans and spending more time with Christine’s BFF Mandy and her husband ChunPeng and their newly adopted cats!  During the day, Christine and I took Anders around LA while Mandy and ChunPeng worked, and at night we all hung out together for dinner, played with the cats, and the men worked on their PS3 skills.

Here are some photos from the first half the trip.  Some links to the places we went:
