Polytechnic Reunion

It was a nice Polytechnic Reunion last night!

I’ve lost contacts to most of my schoolmates from the graduate school in Polytechnic University. I ran into Hsiang-yang’s family at Mike’s wedding two and a half years ago and then I invited both Mike’s and Hsiang-yang’s families to our wedding two months later. However, I did not know what I was busy for during all these years. We just didn’t find time to get together again until the time I sent out the email about quitting Cisco. We started talking again!

Mike suggested to have a potluck party at our place and I was very excited about it. Mike brought 粉蒸肉 ﹠ 蔴油雞; Lulu also cooked Harrison’s favorite 油飯 & brought 燒鴨. Mike was such a good cook and used to cook for his roommates and schoolmates. And this time, he still didn’t let us down. Lulu的油飯也一掃而空，我都還沒吃到第二碗呢，就全沒了. The best part is the dessert. Mike taught us how to make taro ball (芋圓). Hsiang-yang’s kids, Joyce & Janet, had so much fun.

Anders seemed to enjoy the event a lot as well. He only took a short nap during our dinner and then he didn’t want to go to sleep until 11:00 PM. Surprising he wasn’t afraid of new faces as much any more. Lulu, Hsiang, Ann and Mike all held him for some time and he “talked and sang” in their arms. The funniest thing is that Anders kept grabbing little Charlotte’s hand when we took pictures. Hehe… “When Anders met Charlotte…”

We were talking about the recent decision we heard that Polytechnic will be bought by NYU and becomes NYU’s Engineering School. We were not sad about it. By contrast, we were all happily talking about applying a new Master diploma! Haha… :p

Everyone has a big change since then, 1996 – the year we met at Polytechnic University in NYC. It was nice to get together again!

Anders 6 Month Birthday – Part 2

Following on Harrison’s previous post, here is a summary of Anders’ 6th month.

After Vancouver, LA and Taiwan, the 6th month was relatively quiet and peaceful. Anders had a new routine. He woke up around 8 AM, finished his morning feeding around 10 AM, followed by his favorite time, walking in the yard.

Since the spring arrived, various flowers have blossomed. I love to go out playing with him during his walk. He was always busy waving his little hands and kicking his feet. It was a pleasant break from work for me. The nicest thing is that he always fell asleep under the warm sun and started his morning nap.

He hated to be left in the Exersaucer (entertainment center) when we have our lunch and dinner. He wants to be a part of the actions. Every time when we held him close to the dining table, he laughed. Thus we started letting him sit in the highchair. Thanks May and Kwok for the highchair. Anders loves it and never bothers us again when we eat.

On his 6th month’s birthday, I was surprised to see him turning 90 degrees in his crib in the morning. He tried to reach high to the hanging toy.

He also started teething. Though he’s been drooling since his second month, we finally saw a white dot in him bottom gum. 他總是把嘴抿來抿去的，像很癢的樣子。It’s very funny.

One of his favorite thing is to playing piano. He “knocks” on the keys and “sings” loudly. Even Grandma Pu found this secret little trick to clam him down from crying. Here is a performance of Anders playing!

Article in Mercury on Taiwanese Election

Dear Mr. Boudreau,

I was excited to see that SJ Mercury covering the Taiwanese elections in a couple of articles this morning. I was raised in the US from a Taiwanese immigrant family, and only recently have tried to understand the Taiwanese political situation, but even to me, your description of the candidate positions underneath the candidate photos are politically biased

Under Ma Ying-Jeau, the positional description you wrote was:

“Wants closer ties with China in hopes of economic growth and possible reunification.”

Reunification with China is definitely NOT one of his position statements. The official endorsement of Chinese reunification with the Taiwanese citizenship is akin to political suicide; by printing this, you are misrepresenting his position and aiding the DPP rhetoric against him.

Under Frank Hsieh, the positional description you wrote was:

“Wants closer ties with China but sees a danger in becoming too economically dependant on the mainland.”

Although this may be his public statement, the DPP positions on restricting chinese imports, limiting business investments by Taiwanese in the Chinese marketplace, even the issue of allowing Chinese students to attend Taiwanese universities, their actions are consistently highly protectionist and cannot be reconciled with the statement “wants closer ties with China”.

I feel that you should either be consistent in writing the official party statement, however misleading, for both candidates, or write the worst arguments against each candidate. The issue is consistency.
