Snowpack studies see grim future

Dwindling snowpack, earlier stream flow and rising temperatures in the Western United States can be attributed directly to human activity and will seriously affect California’s water supply, perhaps in a matter of decades, according to new research.

As if we needed another reason to fear the Hayward Fault, earthquake experts gathered in San Francisco Tuesday provided two: It’s longer and mightier than once thought; and it is connected to the restless Calaveras Fault that runs through Santa Clara County’s east foothills.
