Snowpack studies see grim future

Dwindling snowpack, earlier stream flow and rising temperatures in the Western United States can be attributed directly to human activity and will seriously affect California’s water supply, perhaps in a matter of decades, according to new research.

Major quake on Hayward fault more likely, scientists say

As if we needed another reason to fear the Hayward Fault, earthquake experts gathered in San Francisco Tuesday provided two: It’s longer and mightier than once thought; and it is connected to the restless Calaveras Fault that runs through Santa Clara County’s east foothills.

Week 3 at Yahoo: Friction

Filed under: Friends, Random Thoughts — harrison at 9:02 am on Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Quite obvious that there are major differences between a startup and a corporation. One of the first I felt viscerally is the amount of friction present in even the most mundane of work activities. For example:

  • Getting my laptop and desktop… days
  • Getting a stable development environment setup… weeks
  • Swapping out my MacBook Laptop for a HP Laptop… a month
  • Debate over whether client-side or server-side should strip out newlines in input… days

Coffee seems to be my lubrication for this friction. Christine has been waking up with me in the morning, and making a nice cup of piping coffee for me in my mug to take onto the Amtrak. Yahoo offers free coffee, mocha, latte, espresso service as well.

Hooray Caffeine.

Need A Trick For Soreness/Ache Relief?

Filed under: Baby Anders, Random Thoughts — christine at 10:03 pm on Friday, December 7, 2007

palmers_leg_relief1.jpgThough Anders has been a well behaved baby who didn’t give me and our nanny much trouble, he did cry badly during the past couple days at early evenings due to the colic (we were guessing since there was no other reason). With his growing weight of 12+ lbs, our arms hurt so much after holding him for two to three hours straight.

Thanks to Danke who introduced me the best lotion ever, Palmer’s Leg Relief. It was used for releasing the pregnancy leg cramp at night but I found it’s the best product I ever used to release any type of soreness and muscle ache. Our nanny told me that her arms were so sore that she couldn’t even fall asleep the first night Anders started crying at early evenings. And you know what?! After using that lotion, she didn’t feel a thing next morning. Similar situations happened to me after my few hiking trips too.

So I am happy to share the secret with you. Try it out next time when your baby requires too much holding or when you exercise too much! :)

Mini Harrison? Or Mini Christine?

Thanks for Tivo and Harrison that we can watch slide shows on our TV now. After my high school friend, Mandy, left on the Thanksgiving weekend, I was bored with Anders falling asleep so I started watching our wedding slide show. It was our 2nd anniversary. All of a sudden this picture below showed up and I could not believe it. Anders looks just like a duplicate.

Then I continued to the Christine’s section. I started thinking that he also looks alike me. It’s a tough call.

For me? I think mini Harrison more than mini Christine. What is your take?

Be proactive and forget to wash your car

Filed under: Home & Garden, Random Thoughts, Web Adventures — harrison at 8:13 pm on Monday, December 3, 2007

North Carolina has 14 local water systems with less than 100 days water supply

Atlanta, Georgia has 80 days of water left

Atlanta’s Mayor takes bold action to fight the drought

Extreme and exceptional droughts plague large swaths of US

Who knows what your state and local governments have planned… if anything at all…

Peter tells me that there is no significant snow in Tahoe yet… and it is December. Obviously this isn’t a good sign.

Everybody knows that a human body can go for 33 days without food, but only 3-4 days without water.

I would suggest not washing your car.
